Spectators at Waitangi Park today witnessed Pedro Barros (Pro’s) and Pat Ngoho (Master’s) take the title as winners of BOWL-A-RAMA™ Wellington for the third year in a row for both of them, in what event organisers are calling the biggest line up of talent to grace the park since the inception of the event in 2008.

A total prize pool of over $20,000 had both local and international riders pulling out the big moves, on the 2nd stop of the officially sanctioned World Cup Skateboarding  (WCS) event. “I’ve had to judge a few events in my time, this one was definitely one of the most difficult,” states Sasha Steinhorst Head Judge from WCS. “Not many people doubt that Pedro is the King of Concrete and he showed us why, he casually toyed with the pool and he rifled off the big level tricks that gave him his 3rd straight Wellington win.” He Comments.

Steinhorst was also taken a back with the talent of new comer to the BOWL-A-RAMA™ series, Kevin Kowalski.

“To the delight of the crowds and every concrete skateboarder we witnessed the absolute genius of Kevin Kowalski, he deservedly earned a first place spot into the final and in the final he unleashed a barage of little seen or never seen tricks. Finesse, style and spontaneous trick selection kept the crowd begging for more. “

“We are stoked to have been able to bring BOWL-A-RAMA™ back to Wellington. The skate culture here is only growing and we hope to be an instrumental part of that for many years to come,” comments Chad Ford, professional skateboarder and Founding Partner of Frontside Events.

“Pat Ngoho showcases skateboarding in its most refined form and because of that he deservedly won his third BOWL-A-RAMA™ Wellington Masters title in a row. There are very few skaters in the world that understand the best skating is a mixture of form and function and when you see that live you become a fan for life.”

Competition day, Saturday the 11th of February, wraps up the week of official festivities that BOWL-A-RAMA™ brings to Wellington including music & art shows, but both crowds and competitors are anticipating it’s return next year.

“BOWL-A-RAMA™ is one of my favourite times of the year… I’m always ready for it to roll around.” Mike Bancroft, professional local skateboarder.

BOWL-A-RAMA RIDER Q+A: MIKE BANCROFT

POSTED Dec

2010

Mike Bancroft is a 22 year old from Albany, New Zealand who has been ripping it up from the skate scene. He took some time out to answer a few questions for us – check it out.

How long have you been skating?

Since I was 10 or 11 so ‘bout 11 years now.

What have you been up to this year, in the world of skate?

I’ve been trying to skate as much as I can. I’ve been riding the new park in Botany, which is amazing. Also been in Melbourne recently too - went on alittle trip with the Element team; was good to get away for a little bit.

The prize purse for BOWL-A-RAMA has increased significantly for
Wellington and Bondi. Are you pumped to get amongst it this year?

Yeah man for sure. I’m always amped to skate Bowl-A-Rama but not for the money side of things (although it would be nice). But just having the opportunity to skate with all the guys I looked up to as a kid is unreal!

Are you competing in both Wellington and Bondi?

Just Wellington at this stage. I wouldn’t mind going to Bondi now you mention it – haven’t been to Sydney yet.

What is your favourite thing about BOWL-A-RAMA?

I’d say the gathering of people from all round the world is what makes it an epic event for me!

Who is your protégé?

All the kids of MSP (Marlbrough Skate Park)

What is your greatest BOWL-A-RAMA moment?

Um probably last year, when I was hit by a car and the MC announced I wouldn’t be skating this year due to injuries from being hit, but I came out from the crowd and skated anyway. Was a good feeling to keep on pushing even after the injuries. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

That’s a hard one. I’d love to see myself in Obama’s, shoes steering the world in the right direction but dunno if that will happen. Most likely be getting older somewhere in the world with a skateboard in hand and a smile on my face.
